Biographical / Historical

he insolvent laws of the state of Louisiana provided that persons unable to meet their credit obligations could avoid legal proceedings against them by surrendering all of his estate to his creditors. Along with his petition to the judge the debtor was to file a schedule of his outstanding debts along with names and residences of the creditors to which those debts were owed. The judge, once he was satisfied as to the intentions of the debtor, authorized a meeting of the creditors to receive the property to be surrendered to them. The Sheriff's Office was responsible for notifying all creditors of the meeting call.
