 Item — Reel: 89-258

Scope and Contents

From the Series:

Police reports, with dispositions in criminal matters, 1853-1856 (VGC205, 3 v.)--apparently copies of Dept. of Police reports for the use of the Recorder. The record for each day gives the names of the persons arrested (white and black persons are listed in separate columns), descriptions of the offenses (where, time of day, arresting officer, nature of the offense, possessions on the person of the arrestee), and brief references to the dispositions made in the individual cases. Records for slaves usually include the name of the master as well. Also included are some reports other than arrests, such as police personnel matters, runaway carts and drays, etc. Volume two (1854-1855) has had several sections of pages torn out and volume three (1855-1856) appears to have an undetermined number of missing pages at the end.

Examples: White person--July 3, 1853; Thomas Martin, arrested at 12 M[idnight] by Fealey and Gibney on the Levee for being drunk and resisting the policemen in the discharge of their duty, had a pocket book; discharged. Slave--January 25, 1855; Gustave, slave, arrested at 8 AM by A. Roth in the Bayou Road as a runaway, has no pass, says he belongs to Dr. Bouzano, had 15 cents; delivered to his master. "Other" reports--Sergt. E.W. Johnston reports Corporal O.O. Daubert for not bringing in the watchmen of his ward and having said watchmen to come in at 5 1/2 o'clock AM instead of at 4 1/2 o'clock AM.
