Enslaved people emancipated by the Councils of Municipalities One, Two, and Three, 1846-1850
Scope and Contents
After the dissolution of the Orleans Parish Police Jury in 1846, the three Municipality Councils assumed emancipation powers. This volume consists of reports by the First Municipality Council of enslaved people whose emancipations were approved by that body. Loose reports from the other two municipalities are also included within the record. Generally, the record for each emancipation includes:
- the name of the enslaver desiring to emancipate
- the name(s) of the enslaved person(s) being emancipated(sometimes with their age(s) and color(s) included)
- date of council approval
