Scope and Contents

The Department of Public Works Photograph Collection contains eight-one photographs showing the streets of New Orleans in varying stages of progress. The majority of these images were taken between 1936-1939 and document the WPA's street paving project. During this time the WPA was responsible for resurfacing some 60 miles of road spanning 15 major streets across the City of New Orleans. Also included here are images of the McGinnis home which was given to the City of New Orleans chapter of the Red Cross and operated as the chapter's headquarters until 1954.
