Scope and Contents

Photographs from the City of New Orleans' Department of Sanitation. Photographs date from the late 1940s-1970s. Special topics include Incinerators and Landfills, Dept. of Sanitation Trucks, Workers, Buildings, and Litter Prevention. Included are a number of photographs from the groundbreaking and dedication of the Revcovery 1 facility. According to the Times Picayune, at the time of its opening in New Orleans East in 1976, Recovery 1 was "the nation's first full scale plant designed to separate garbage for sale and reuse of its various components."
