Biographical / Historical
According to a 1950 survey, construction and operation of the House of Detention dates back to 1900-1908 when the city purchased land bounded by Tulane, Broad, Gravier, and White, providing funds for the constuction of "the House of Detention," granting money to furnish it, regulating its operation and providing employment for individuals to care for the insane incarcerated there (Ordinances 246, 620, 1976, 4622 and 5149, N.C.S.). A new House of Detention opened in 1967 and closed in 2012, at which time it was holding local, state, and federal offenders as well as people who had not yet gone to trial.
