Biographical / Historical

Jon Johnson served as the District E City Council representative from 2010-2011. Johnson was born in Hammond, Louisiana where he attended Greenville Park High School. He received a bachelor’s degree in economics from Southern University of New Orleans and a master’s in business administration from Loyola University. Johnson worked as the associate director of the Urban League of Greater New Orleans from 1972-1979. He was elected as a State Representative from 1980 to 1985, and then held a seat in the State Senate from 1985-2003 representing most of the eastern part of New Orleans and the Lower Ninth Ward. He then ran an unsuccessful re-election campaign for the Senate before being elected to the New Orleans City Council in 2010 as the District E representative. Johnson did not serve a full term in the City Council; he resigned in 2012 after pleading guilty to the misuse of federal funds awarded his nonprofit, the Ninth Ward Housing Development Corporation, following Hurricane Katrina.
