Biographical / Historical
The City of Lafayette was incorporated by state act and given a municipal charter in 1833, along with faubourgs Nuns and Livaudias. Though formerly of Orleans Parish, these areas upriver of Felicity Street had become part of a new parish--Jefferson Parish--in 1825. The City of Lafayette became the first parish seat of Jefferson Parish. Lafayette remained a separate municipality until it was incorporated into the City of New Orleans in 1852. This is also the year that New Orleans consolidated its three separate municipalities into one municipal government. When Lafayatte was annexed to New Orleans, it became the fourth municipal district of the City. In the image above of Norman's Plan of the City, the City of Lafayette is shown to the far left.
