 Collection
Identifier: SC-118-MS

Scope and Contents

Typewritten memoir of Schroeder's early life in Germany, his emigration to the U.S. (arriving at New York in 1906), and his subsequent travels around the country. Dr. Schroeder also offers an "appraisal of American impressions" from the point of view of one brought up in the European tradition. His purpose is to "bring you to realize the struggles an immigrant has to endure to reach a position that a native-born American may find difficult enough to attain with all the advantages that are his." In the process, he offers his observations on various American institutions. The memoir is titled "Impressions of an Immigrant" and was written in 1933 under the pseudonym "John E. Taylor."

Also included is a memoir of Schroeder's 1908 climb of Pike's Peak, undated, also under the Taylor pseudonym.
