Biographical / Historical

Orleans Parish School Board (OPSB) was founded in 1841 for the purpose of administering the Public School system in New Orleans. The Orleans Parish School Board administers the New Orleans Public Schools, but the two appear to have been used interchangably in their records. The first integration of Public Schools in New Orleans occured in November of 1960. Ruby Bridges entered William Frantz Elementary School, while Leona Tate, Tessie Provost, and Gail Etienne (also known as The McDonogh Three) began at McDonogh 19 Elementary School. Desegretation of schools was highly controversial. In the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina in 2005, significant changes were made to the New Orleans schooling system, and the state-run Recovery School District (RSD) took over the operating of schools in Orleans Parish. The Orleans Parish School Board continues to operate in New Orleans along with a variety of parochial, charter, and private schools.
