Councilmember Peggy Wilson District A and At-Large records
Scope and Contents
The majority of records in this collection are from Wilson's At-Large term on City Council; however, a few date back to her previous District A terms. Materials have been grouped into five seperate series, reflecting the activities of her office. Wilson's office kept extensive subject files on city agencies, businesses, local organizations, and topics of local interest. Additionally, they maintained files on select individuals, including politicians and business members of the community. A third series of records comprise Wilson's activities involving the 1988 Republican National Convention, which took place in New Orleans. The final two comprise the appointments and daily schedules of the Councilmember.

Biographical / Historical
Peggy Wilson was elected to represent District A on the City Council in 1986 as a Republican. She was reelected in 1990 and four years later ran successfully for one of the two at-large seats on the Council. During her career in city government Wilson earned a reputation as the "watchdog of the Council." Her views often put Wilson at odds with the city administration and the majority of her colleagues on the Council. While on the Council she ran unsuccessful campaigns for the office of state Insurance Commissioner and for the U.S. Senate. Wilson's attempt at reelection to the Council At-Large position in 1998 was unsuccessful.
Wilson (born Margaret Henican) is a native of New Orleans. She graduated from the Academy of the Sacred Heart in New Orleans in 1955 and from Barat College in Illinois in 1959 with a degree in English. After teaching in the parochial schools of the Crescent City, she worked in the fields of campaign management, advertising, and public relations. From 1980-1985 she was president of Peggy Wilson and Associates, a local public relations firm. Wilson has long been active in promoting education, historic preservation, and the rights of children, as well as in local and state Republican Party affairs.
