The records comprise the minutes of meetings of the Board of Directors and minutes of the organization's semi-annual general meetings. Included therein are detailed notes on the remarks of guest speakers at the meetings. Pasted into the minutes are copies of the constitution, yearbooks, meeting notices, programs, and other materials.

Biographical / Historical

Organized in 1911-1912 as the Women's Interdenominational Church and Missionary Federation, the group changed its name, ca. 1932, to the Federation of Protestant Church Women of New Orleans. With the revision of the organization's constitution in 1939, its name became New Orleans Council of Church Women. The group sought to promote the religious spirit in the city and worked in four major areas of activity: Missionary work, Service to the community, Service to young people, Service to children. In pursuit of these interests, the organization, for example, provided aid to children at the hospital in Carville, La., and provided religious instruction and other services to the inmates of the Milne Boys' Home. Other activities were centered around reform and other movements of the day, e.g., oppostion to gambling and support for local men involved in the war.
