Scope Note: In 1989 the National Endowment for the Humanities granted funds to the City Archives & Special Collections to support the microfilming of pre-1862 municipal records in the city archives collection. This includes the records of the Spanish Cabildo. 1769, before the Louisiana Purchase and through the beginnings of the Civil War in 1861. Not included in the project are records of the cities of Carrollton, Jefferson, and Lafayette, as well as the Orleans Parish courts, which were filmed as part of a separate project.

Tax Assessment Rolls, 1857-1975

Scope and Contents The assessment rolls proper begin in 1857. The volumes are arranged by municipal district, broken down by assessment districts, and then by square. Individual line entries record the name of the landowner, the number and measurements of the lot, the streets bounding the property (and the street fronting it), and the assessed value for both the assessment year and the previous year. Testamentary Executors of the Estate of John McDonogh records

The records are manuscript volumes. Volume one has printed headings with the title, "Bills receivable of the testamentary executors of the estate of John McDonogh," at the front of the book, with "Bills payable ..." at the rear. The second volume, dated 1850-1852, is a cash book of receipts and expenditures.

Third Municipality records

Scope and Contents

The records of the Third Municipality include the Third Municipality Council, financial and legal departments, and records of police, correctional institutions, and wharfs. The image to the right shows the boundaries that were in place during the Municipality Period from 1836-1852, dividing the city into three separate entities. The Third Municipality occupied the area east of Esplanade, and east of the First Municipality.

Treasurer's Office

Records are separated into series according to date, as the functions of make up of the office changed throughout history. Additional descriptions are included within each series of records. Researchers should note that during the period of 1836-1852 the city was divided into three separate municipalities, with separate governing bodies. Financial records from this time period are described with each municipality's records.
