The Council Research staff performed numerous and varied tasks at the request of individual councilmembers. In addition to drafting legislation those tasks included preparing speeches/remarks, drafting letters, drafting proclamations, and researching issues related to the business of the City Council. Later in the period covered by these records the office began to keep separate files (CPR) for proclamations, most of which were discarded by the Archives. All CRS files were retained but were weeded to remove (numerous) duplicates, materials collected from non-Louisiana sources (copies of other cities' legislation and the like), copies of local newspaper articles, and other materials not produced by or for the Council Research staff or other city officials/employees. The files are arranged in numerical order by year.

No files (with the exception of several included in the Correspondence/Subject Files series) from prior to 1987 were transferred to the Archives. A fair number of individual files were not included in the transfer; no attempt has been made to list those that are missing. Additional files were found to be empty; the archivist marked them as empty as of the date viewed. No attempt has been made to list empty files. A number of CRS files came to the Archives apart from the main series of such records; those have been inventoried separately as "stray" files.
