Office of Environmental Affairs records

 Collection
Identifier: CA-AAEV

Scope and Contents

The records were selected for transfer to the City Archives by staff in the Environmental Affairs Office following the departure of director Gerald White from city government. The transfer was completed in November 1999.

The records deal mainly with individual environment-related projects handled by the Office since its establishment in 1994. Also included are earlier materials apparently collected by third parties and made available to the Office. The file on the Environmental Task Force of the Morial Transition Team includes materials from the 1993 mayoral election campaign. The Miscellaneous file includes materials found loose in the transfer boxes along with additional unmarked items.

Biographical / Historical

Mayor Marc H. Morial established the Office of Environmental Affairs in the Mayor's Office in response to the recommendations of the Environmental Task Force element of his Volunteer Transition Team. An earlier environmental office had been established by Mayor Ernest N. Morial but was discontinued by his successor due to budgetary constraints.

The Task Force actually recommended that environmental matters be given Executive Assistant status on the mayor's staff, but that did not happen. The Office of Environmental Affairs initially reported to the Executive Assistant for Economic Development and Policy Planning but was shifted to Intergovernmental Relations after 1995. Environmental Affairs originally was staffed by a single Urban Planning Specialist V but in subsequent years additional staff was budgeted.
