United States. Army. 5th Military District General and Special Orders
Scope and Contents
The general orders were published in two volumes, one for 1867 and the other for 1868. Each order is "signed" by the Assistant Adjutant General and also carries the actual signature of a second, usually inferior, officer. Most of the orders deal with personnel matters (transfers, appointments, changes in command, etc.) and various matters concerning the military and/or the civilian population. Many of the orders deal with courts martial, giving the name, charge, plea, finding, sentence, and additional comments for each individual defendant. Other orders deal with reports of election returns, proceedings of "Field Courts," and various other matters of concern to the military and/or the civilian population. The 1868 volume includes an index to the names appearing in the orders for that year.
