Biographical / Historical
The original Charity Hospital opened in 1736. After moving several locations, the hospital opened on Tulane Avenue under the administration of the Daughters of Charity in 1834. They administered the hospital for the next century until it joined University Hospital (formerly Hotel Dieu Hospital) as a large medical campus. In 1939, the current building opened and was considered one of the largest in the nation at the time. After 269 years of operation, the hospital closed in the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina in 2005 after suffering extensive flooding damage. Renovations and restorations were abandoned by the state government in favor of building a new teaching hospital at the edge of Mid City.
