Contains records related to public utilities in the city of New Orleans, including some records by the New Orleans Public Service Inc. (NOPSI), the Taxicab Bureau, Office of Telecommunications, and administrators. The records include subject files, project files, plans, correspondence between various departments, and volumes of bills, ledgers, and complaints.

The records include correspondence/subject files from Schiro's tenure as Councilman, as well as his terms as Mayor (the 1961 files contain both mayoral and councilmanic papers). Also included is a series of records from the Mayor's Public Relations Office, 1957-1970 (extending slightly into the tenure of Schiro's successor, Moon Landrieu).

Scope and Contents From the Collection: Much of the material is "ceremonial" (i.e., letters of introduction/greetings, letters of appointment, etc.) but there are documents of more significance, especially in the files for city of New Orleans government agencies. The New Orleans Police Department files include scattered reports on investigations of houses of prostitution, fortune-telling, and other "nuisances" of the day. Contains administrative files related to projects in the 1970s and 1980s. These files contain correspondence and reports from city, state, and federal governments.

Scope and Contents From the Collection:

A former superintendent of the New Orleans Police Department (1960-1975), Chief Giarrusso's interest in the NOPD and in law enforcement continued through his years on the Council, an interest that is reflected in these records. Other issues that are particularly well represented relate to public utilities policy and regulation, gambling and the city's proposed land-based casino, and anti-smoking legislation, for which the Chief acted as one of New Orleans' strongest advocates.

The records, in 13 volumes, consist of carbon copies of typewritten monthly reports showing income and expenditures for the Company, Company balance sheets, and other financial information.

This collection contains travel maps covering primarily New Orleans and Louisiana. The bulk of the maps date from 1954-1989. The maps include a number of Transit Maps issued by the New Orleans Public Services Inc. and later the Regional Transit Authority.
