Scope and Contents

The records of the Landrieu administrations are divided between the Loyola University of New Orleans Department of Archives and Special Collections and the City Archives at the New Orleans Public Library. Through a cooperative project, NOPL microfilmed both sets of records. The following is the inventory of the City Archives portion of the Landrieu records.

Biographical / Historical

Maurice Edwin "Moon" Landrieu served as the 56th Mayor of New Orleans from 1970-1978. Born in Uptown New Orleans, Landrieu attended Jesuit High School and Loyola University. In 1960, Landrieu was elected to the Louisiana House of Representatives. In 1966, Landrieu was elected as Councilman-At-Large to the New Orleans City Council.

Landrieu's administration was responsible for the city's housing overhaul, the creation of the HDLC, and for better integrating city government for the first time since Reconstruction.

After completing his second term as Mayor, Landrieu served as Secretary of Housing and Urban Development under President Jimmy Carter.
