Scope and Contents

This collection includes 18 boxes of files from Fitzmorris's tenure as At-Large Councilmember. Major areas of focus are Leases on City owned property, the Sewerage and Water Board, and extensive recordkeeping of his appointments. This collection also includes a small amout of Fitzmorris' personal papers.

Biographical / Historical

James "Jimmy" Fitzmorris served two terms on the New Orleans City Council as the District C representative (1954-1962), and a third term At-Large (1962-1966). Following his tenure on the City Council, Fitzmorris ran two unsuccessful campaigns for Mayor. He was then elected Leutenient Governor in 1971 and served two terms. A lifelong democrat, Fitzmorris' political career spanned over 30 years.

Fitzmorris was born in New Orleans in 1921 and grew up in the Irish Channel neighborhood. He attended Jesuit High School and Loyola University before starting his career with the Kansas City Southern Railroad where he rose through the ranks, eventually becomming vice president. Following his political career, he worked as a consultant and in real estate, and remained active in various civic associations, mostly based in Lakefront area where he lived. Fitzmorris passed away in 2021.
