Scope and Contents

This series contains the builk of the CPC collection, including most of the more recent files created by the City Planning Commission after its merger with the Board of Zoning Adjustments. Meeting minutes, zoning dockets, and ordinances and amendments were produced by the CPC office for the City Council and the public. Subject files and office records were used for internal studies related to zoning and zoning ordinances.

Biographical / Historical

After the completion of the first comprehensive zoning ordinance in 1929, the department oversaw a drastic expansion of the city and city infrastructure. Recently complete suburbs in Lakeview and Gentilly opened, New Orleans east began being developed by the 1950s, the implementation of low income housing by the Housing Authority, and the department would also oversee the development of federal and state infrastructure such as the federal highway and the Louisiana Superdome.

The commission completed new comprehensive zoning ordinances in 1953 and 1970. Harlan and Associates were commissioned to study the zoning needs and hold public hearings for the 1929 and 1953 zoning ordinances.
